Wall's image After "Invisible Man" is inspired by Ralph Ellison's 1952 novel Invisible Man . The novel is about a man who, during a riot, falls into a cellar room of a large apartment building and stays there, hidden - his cieling covered with 1,369 light bulbs.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.

.........

There is a community of the spirit.
Join it, and feel the delight
of walking in the noisy street
and being the noise.
Drink all your passion,
and be a disgrace.
Close both eyes
to see with the other eye.

.........

Birdsong brings relief
to my longing
I'm just as ecstatic as they are,
but with nothing to say!
Please universal soul, practice
some song or something through me!

"Nesting Place" at Tacoma Contemporary

Nesting Place
Where: Tacoma Contemporary, in the windows of the historic Woolworth building in downtown Tacoma (WA) - at the intersection of Commerce and 11th streets.
When: Nov 17, 2008 - Feb 14, 2009

Nesting Place is inspired by nest of the paper wasp. In the Pacific Northwest, paper wasps have annual colonies that are often found under the eaves of human-made structures. Over-winter a colony can rapidly decline and leave the nests empty and lifeless, but again, in the spring, the wasps return to the same spot to build their new nest adjacent to the old ones - holding on to the solace of things past while constructing a hope for the future.

Built entirely from hand-sculpted papers set in dynamic relation to one another, the installation was designed specifically for the eaves and walls of the gallery space.

Dimensions of Installation: 25' x 15' x 15"
Dimensions of Image Above (Detail): 3' x 3' x 5"
Medium: Monotypes, insect collection pins
